Critic - No.151 Director:  Bala Casts:  Jyothika, G.V.Prakash, Ivana Language:  Tamil Music: Ilayaraja Genre: Crime / Drama SYNOPSIS: A harsh police officer Naachiyaar (Jyothika) investigates a minor’s rape case that progressively unveils deeper revelations than expected. REVIEW: After making waves with his debut film ‘Sethu’ in the year 1999, director Bala carved a name for himself as one of the most darkest film maker in Indian cinema. Even a comedy film like ‘Avan Ivan (2010)’ or a musical film like ‘Thaara Thappatai (2016)’ , Bala treats his stories with a gruesome, gory tragedy. However, ‘Naachiyaar’ will be something that breaks the stereotype and fear we have for his films.  Starting with a long take Arial shot over a pile of rubbish, Bala starts his metaphorical commentary on the polluted society that is driven by materialistic objectives. This stand further develops as the film digs deeper on the minor girl’s pregnancy case. Unlike other Bala’s film, t

Critic - No.150 Director:  Joe Wright Casts:  Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James Language:  English Genre: Biography / Drama / History SYNOPSIS: During the early days of World War II, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman), who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler or fight against an incredible odd.  REVIEW: Following the grand success of Nolan’s vision on one of the most important historical moment in Britain, Joe Wright extends his spectacular glimpse he showed in Atonement into a full-fledged film. This time Wright displays the other side of the channel where Britain’s armed forces were on the verge of being wiped out in 1940.  Without experimenting too much on the presentation, the film maker follows a proven straight forward template for biopics with meticulously executed visuals. By now Wright can be considered as one of the best period film directors we have in t

REVIEW: Mysskin has been easily labelled as a film maker who is fond of dark thrillers with a heavy dose of intensity. However , ‘Savarakathi’ is a surprising entry in his writing book that expresses the funny bone inside him.  The film revolves around the cat and mouse chase between Pichai who voluntarily offends the ruthless rowdy, Manga who will be facing his three year jail imprisonment that same evening. Pichai has not only have to save himself but also shade his naggy pregnant wife Subathra, his two children and attend the secret marriage of his brother-in-law. With loads of obstacles stacked up, debutant (also Mysskin’s younger brother) G.R. Adithya pulls off
