Critic - No.108 Director:  Radha Mohan Casts: Arulnithi, Vivek, Tanya, Senthil, Cell Murugan Music: Vishal Chandrasekhar Language: Tamil Genre:  Comedy Drama Plot:   A jovial, deaf and mute barber, Kannan (Arulnithi) bumps into his favourite actor Vivek. Their bond progressively enables Kannan to see life in a different shade. However, Kannan’s dark hidden past starts to resurface one day.   Review: Radha Mohan is one of the respectable, family friendly filmmaker who has made notable films like ‘Mozhi (2007)’, ‘Abhiyum Naanum (2008)’ and ‘Payanam (2011)’. After a brief hiatus, he is back with his favourite genre of comedy drama. Even though the official trailer fondly reminds us his hit film, ‘Mozhi’ due to the deaf and dumb protagonist and some recurring casts, ‘Brindhavanam’ addresses totally a different theme altogether. This time Radha Mohan touches on acceptanc

HUSH (2016)

Critic - No.107 Director:  Mike Flanagan Casts: J ohn Gallagher Jr., Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco  Language: English Genre:  Thriller Plot:  A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight against a masked killer who appears at her window one night. Review: Half of the battle is won when a film has a vulnerable protagonist against a deadly, twisted antagonist. The biggest strength of this film is the carefully engineered format that speedily intensifies step by step. It is very interesting to watch the mystery writer, Maddie (Kate Siegel) facing her own night of terror and due to her imagination backing; she comes up with ingenious ways of facing the slasher (John Gallagher Jr). The way director Flanagan focuses his total runtime on just two characters, makes the screenplay very sharp. He maximises the intensity by the help of nat

ALIEN: COVENANT (2017)

Critic - No.106 Director:  Ridley Scott Casts: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston , Billy Crudup , Danny McBride Language: English Genre:  Sci-fi Action Plot:  The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination. They must attempt a harrowing escape to avoid a disastrous streak of killing. Review: After a decent redemption with the Oscar nominated ‘The Martian (2015)’ , Ridely Scott returned to his beloved genre of sci-fi and this film garnered lots of expectation. Happening after about 15 years later from the previous film, ‘The Prometheus’ , Scott focuses on the Covenant ship’s trails of unfortunate encounters and stacks up the narrative with a predictable yet exciting, horrific set pieces. The main strength of the film lies on the visual details that have been the strength of Scott from the ve

A YELLOW BIRD (2016)

Critic - No.105 Director:  K.Rajagopal Casts: Sivakumar Palakrishnan, Huang Lu, Seema Biswas,Udaya Soundari, Indra Chandran, Nithya Rao Language: Tamil Genre:  Drama Plot:  An ex-convict who sets on a quest to reunite with his family forms a complex bond with an illegal Chinese sex worker while serving as her bodyguard. Review: Right from the first frame, K.Rajagopal’s ‘A Yellow Bird’ flows like a silent symphony and sets off deeper as a character study of the protagonist, Siva as it progresses. We get to see the frustration of a man who is walking on a thin line between his unaccepting family and the shunning society. We also get to see a sign of his past that he is seeking for, through his mother, crude sister-in-law and his new friend, Chen Chen (Huang Lu). The film is more visual if we minus away the over the top swearing at times. The bond between the two ‘trapped’
